Contrasting half-centuries from National player Chris Barnwell (70) and Jamal Hinckson (70) put DCC in control over GDF on day one of the GCA’s GISE, Trophy Stall & Star Party two-day Cricket Final yesterday at Bourda.
Barnwell’s run-a-ball 70 came from 192 minutes and was decorated with 13 fours, while Hinckson faced 53 balls and batted for 119 minutes; reaching the boundary five times and clearing it once.
West Indies U-19 opener Tevin Imlach retired hurt with cramps in his forehand on 45 with four fours and a six. He added 62 for the fourth wicket with Hinckson as DCC ended the day on 184-5 in reply to GDF’s 160.
Six GDF batsmen got into double figures but Randy Lindore, who batted for just over an hour, top-scored with 25 with three fours and put together 49 for the fifth wicket with Ishwar Singh, whose 24 included two fours and six.
Barnwell (3-36) left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun (3-38) and pacer Paul Wintz (2-19) bowled well for DCC.
Berbice and Guyana pacer Romario Sheppard took the first two wickets to leave DCC on 10-2 and returned to dismiss the stylish Hinckson to end the day 3-19 as DCC finished with a lead of 24 runs with five wickets in hand, including Imlach who needs 55 more to register consecutive centuries in the competition.
Put in to bat, GDF lost Quacey McPherson LBW to Barnwell for a duck at 2-1. Wintz got rid Hakeem Hinds (1) and Leon Andrews (14) whose top-edged hook ballooned to the Keeper to leave the soldiers on 32-3.
It was soon 34-4 when Richard Ramdeen (23) fell to Bishun before Singh and Lindore joined forces in operation rebuild.
Both batsmen went after the spinners with Lindore using his feet to hit Bishun for a couple of boundaries in one over and Singh lofting Dennis Squires into the Rohan Kanhai stand.
But both batsmen departed with the score on 87 before Dexter Solomon (4) was run out at 101-7. Jerimiah Harris (21*) and Sheppard (22) threw their bats around before Bishun ended the Soldier’s fight by having Nial Smith (12) caught and bowled.
DCC, without four of their players because of the GCB U-19 tournament which continues today, lost Brian Sattuar (2) and Kevin Boodie (0) in quick succession before Barnwell and Imlach repaired the damage.
Just when Barnwell, a bully at the local level with consistent performances for DCC, was looking set for a hundred he lofted Lindore to the fielder on the mid-wicket boundary to again throw his wicket away at 94-4 after a confident caught behind appeal from all the fielders was turned down by First-Class Umpire Shannon Crawford.
Hinkson, who got off the mark with a first-ball six off Lindore, joined Imlach, who was pacing his innings excellently. Imlach, who effortlessly deposited spinner Andre O’Neil onto the sightscreen, was forced to retire with cramps in sweltering heat.
A fair size crowd of mostly vocal DCC supporters watched as Hinckson stroked Lindore for two fours with consummate ease and pounced upon Smith like a cat upon a mouse and smashed him for consecutive boundaries.
Hinckson was soon LBW to Sheppard at 181-4 before Jahron Bryon was run out by the length of the pitch without addition to the score. Kemol Savory (2) and Squires (0) survived to the close.
The final day is scheduled to start at 09:30hrs today.
