Bachelors Adventure / Paradise Sports Club (BAPSC) emerged as champions of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) organised Golden Jubilee Under-17 tournament when they defeated a tough Buxton Stars
1-0 yesterday afternoon at the Golden Grove ground.
Golden Stars ran away with the third place trophy on account of a 3-1 win over Victoria Kings. In a closely fought championship match, BAPSC absorbed lots of pressure from the nippy Buxton side throughout the encounter and it was a long range shot early in the second half that separated the two sides.
BAPSC, enjoying a size advantage were airtight at the back even as the Buxton players tried for all their worth to dribble past their opponents but were not successful. Shots on goal were few and far; it took a long range missile off the boot of Ingram Clarke three minutes into the second half to decide the winner.
The previously unbeaten Buxton Stars, much to their credit were all over their opponents in the final 15 minutes but excellent goalkeeping by the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper Ryan Edward Harris denied and kept Buxton at bay.
The final whistle saw the BAPSC team celebrating a well deserved victory. Golden Stars FC were golden in their display against Victoria Kings whom they blanked 3-1 thanks to first half goals from Michael Scott in the 2nd minute, Cevon Montrose in the 27th and Shemar Kingston 31st minute. Victoria’s consolation goal was netted by Nairon Johnson in the 78th minute.
Shemar Scott of Buxton Stars ended as the Highest Goal Scorer with a total of four (4) goals.
At the presentation ceremony, EDFA President Alfred King complimented the winners and all the participating clubs as well as coaches for their combined efforts which contributed towards the success of the tournament.
He noted that the Under-17 level will be one of their main focus areas since this is the level that will feed into the senior ranks. He informed the players and gathering that the concluded tournament is the precursor to the Guyana Football Federation organised Intra Association NAMILCO Flour Power U-17 tourney which will kick off mid May.
King also announced that in an effort to build partnership with a sister association while affording players the opportunity test their level against other teams, the EDFA and the EBFA have agreed to pit their top two U-17 teams against each other over two weekends.
To this end, Paradise will oppose EBFA’s second placed U-17s, Soesdyke, while EBFA’s champions Grove Hi Tech will take on Buxton Stars on Saturday at the Golden Grove ground from 13:00hrs.
The respective winners and loser will then clash on the East Bank the following Saturday.
