US Ambassador pledges assistance with city clean-up

US Ambassador, Perry Halloway, paid a courtesy call on recently elected Mayor Patricia Chase-Green and Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan, yesterday morning.

During his visit to the Mayor, Ambassador Halloway offered assistance to the new administrators of City Hall. He said that the US Embassy is willing to get on board with the clean-up campaign by way of providing bins.
He also said that vandalism and theft of the bins need to be addressed as well.
The Ambassador stated that every year the Embassy can apply for funding to inject into development projects through an entity known as the AMBASSADORS FUND. He intimated that Georgetown is going places in the near future and the US Embassy wants to be on board.
Halloway also expressed an interest in the restoration of the Lighthouse; one of Guyana’s most historic buildings, that has been neglected and seemingly forgotten.
He also commented on assistance in the proper training of the City Constabulary. Proper training of Constabulary ranks and City Hall staff has long been a cause for concern; this is heartening news for the citizens of Georgetown.
Mayor Chase-Green has since announced that the City Constabulary is going to be reintroduced to the streets in the near future. Ranks are currently being trained in several areas, more notably Environmental Protection.
Ms Chase-Green said that the ranks will be sworn in and that they’ll have the power of arrest when reintroduced.
They’ll be monitoring littering as well as tackling illegal parking and stopping, two key areas that need to be addressed.
