Three suspected sex workers from the Dominican Republic were fined a total of $45,000 after admitting to overstaying their time in Guyana. They claimed that they liked the country and wanted to explore it more.
Yolanda Hernandez, 25, Valarie Montano, 26 and Jafrez Cordeiro, 26 all failed to comply with conditions of their permits. They were permitted to stay in Guyana from February 12 to March 13, but remained until April 11.
The women who spoke to the court with the aid of a Spanish interpreter, all claimed that they liked the country and wanted to spend a little more time site seeing.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat appeared on behalf of the women and told the court that they came here seeking a better life.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, said that the trio came to Guyana on March 14 via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and were granted a one month stay. He said that on April 11, police went to a hotel in Bartica after receiving information that sex workers were residing there. Jones said that police, upon checking the women’s passport, observed that they had breached the conditions under which their permits were granted.
They were each ordered to pay a fine of $15,000 with an alternative of serving a five-day prison sentence.
In another case, a Cuban National who had overstayed for one year and four months was fined $20,000 after he was brought before the Chief Magistrate.
Pedro O’Donis, who resided in the interior, was granted a permit to stay from October 10, 2014 to November 11, 2014. But on April 10, 2016, it was discovered that he had overstayed.
Prosecutor Jones said that O’Donis arrived in the country on October 10, 2014 and was granted a one month stay. He said that the Cuban was arrested at Moleson Creek after officers checked his passport and observed that he had overstayed his time.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat added that his client was arrested while en route to Suriname since he thought his passport was in order.
Failure to pay the fine will see him being jailed for four weeks.
