Demerara U-19s registered a crushing seven-wicket victory in their opening round match against the National U-17 Select at Wales yesterday to take an early lead in the four-team GCB’s Hand-in-Hand three-day U-19 cricket
tournament joining Essequibo in winner’s row.
Twice on the final day the U-17s seemed to launching a fight-back on what was a difficult track to bat on in sultry conditions. But they could not sustain their periods of dominance and older and more experienced U-19s were let off the hook in a match that saw 13 LBW appeals upheld.
A 69-run seventh wicket stand between the resolute Kurt Lovell (22) and left-handed National U-17 off-spinner Sagar Hatheramani (44), whose batting has improved tremendously, spearheaded the first phase of the fight-back which helped the U-17s to 160 all out.
Leg-spinner Ershad Ali (4-48 from 20 overs) and off-spinner Keshram Shabodan (4-16 from 18 overs) utilized a sluggish track with plenty turn to share eight scalps between them.
Set 61 to win, National U-17 Left-arm spinners Ashmead Nedd and Kelvin Umroa took three wickets in the space of six runs to have Demerara reeling on 26-3 but once again they could not produce the knock-out punch and the hosts reached 64-3 with Nedd finishing with 2-25.
Scores: U-17s (90 & 160), Demerara U-19s (190 & 64-3).
The U-17s, 100 runs in arrears, began their second innings on 58-3 with Night Watchman Anthony Antonio and Kevin St Clair at the crease. After batting for over an hour, Antonio, who looked organised with the bat, was LBW to Ali to leave the U-17s on 82-4.
Shabodan trapped St Clair LBW for 26 from 44 minutes with four fours without addition to the score before Alphius Bookie (6) was bowled by Ali, who took four of the first five wickets to fall as three wicket fell for eight runs.
At 90-6 the home team must have harboured thoughts of a win before Lunch but Lovell was joined by Hatheramani who played with contrasting styles and by lunch the partnership had progressed to 69 with Hatheramani taking the attack to bowlers under blue skies.
The news that Berbice had been asked to follow-on in the other game at Enterprise and the knowledge that only two sessions were left to complete a victory seemed to inspire the Demerara bowlers.
Surprisingly, Ali, who had the opportunity to take eight wickets, did not bowl a ball after the interval.
Skipper Renaldo Ali-Mohamed brought himself into the attack to bowl in tandem with Shabodan and tactic worked perfectly.
Shabodan struck in the first over by having Lovell LBW at 159-7 and had Hatheramani LBW at 160-7, while Ali-Mohamed (2-21) got rid of Nedd and Colin Barlow for ducks to LBW decisions as the last four wickets tumbled in 10 minutes for one run.
Demerara began their response in t20 fashion with Raymond Perez (15) cover driving Antonio for four before stroking Nedd for a boundary, while Ronaldo Renee (5) hammered Barlow gloriously for four.
Perez was LBW to Nedd at 20-1 while Sherfane Rutherford slapped Nedd for a one-bounce four over point. He played recklessly to St Clair on the mid-wicket boundary and was dropped off Umroa at 26-1.
Umroa had Perez LBW next ball while Rutherford (5) played a senseless drive off Nedd to St Clair on the cover boundary when all that was needed was to hit the ball into the gaps.
Malcolm Hubbard (26*) and Shewpersaud (12*) snuffed out the U-17s enthusiasm by taking their team to victory without further loss.
Hubbard used his feet and smashed Umroa down the ground before sweetly caressing another boundary past cover.
Shewpersaud’s confident boundary off Umroa eased the pressure, while Hubbard delightfully drove Umroa for four to post the 50 in 11.2 overs before finishing the contest 35 minutes before Tea with a massive six.
Demerara face defending Champions Berbice at Everest, while the U-17s battle Essequibo at DCC and both matches are scheduled to start tomorrow at 10: 00hrs.
