—fined for driving without licence
The young airport employee who was caught driving a stolen car by police at a roadblock was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul. He was charged with simple larceny.
Messiah Eastman, 21, of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara denied that between April 10 and April 11 at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, he stole one motorcar valued at $2M, property of Aubrey Stoby.
He was denied bail after Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal David Goodridge, opposed his being admitted to pre trial liberty. The Prosecutor pointed to the fact that the car was found in his possession and that he attempted to escape from police.
Eastman was also fined $40, 000 after admitting to driving without a licence.
Stoby had left his car keys with Patrick Evans, a security guard at the Ogle International Airport. The key was left there to be picked up by his son, since Stoby was leaving for the interior.
Evans misplaced the keys and later observed that the car was missing. He reported it to another guard and subsequently to the Sparendaam Police Station on April 11.
Around 22:00hrs, on Sparendaam Public Road, police ranks at a roadblock identified the vehicle driven by the defendant as the said one that was reported stolen.
Eastman was told of the offence and claimed that he saw the keys on the floor and decided to take the vehicle for a drive.
It was reported that Eastman was detained Monday night with the stolen Toyota Runx after he drove up to a roadblock. The roadblock at Sparendaam was headed by Police Inspector, Christopher Humphrey, who observed the dark coloured car approaching Ogle to go further up the East Coast.
The driver of the car, upon seeing the roadblock attempted to turn around, immediately arousing the suspicion of ranks on duty.
However, at the time they reportedly had no knowledge that the vehicle was stolen and challenged the driver who claimed that his licence was left at home.
The driver was booked for a traffic offence and it was later discovered by police that the car was the same vehicle that was reported stolen earlier in the day.
This matter will be called again on April 29, in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court which is temporarily being housed at the Better Hope Community Centre.
