The police in ‘B’ Division (that covers Regions Five and Six) under the leadership of its Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, continue their community interventions programmes across the County. Community Relations Officer Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams has been busy coordinating the programmes in the division.
Recently, Officer in Charge of Sub Division No 2(Corentyne) Deputy Superintendent Marlon Taylor along with Station Sergeant O. Welch and Corporal Tyndall of the Whim Police Station, in collaboration with Pastor Dennis Ram of the Revival Temple Assembly of God Church, started a community intervention which targets unemployed persons from within the Whim Station district.
According to Taylor, one of the objectives of the programme is to equip them with the basic but necessary skills which will help them to gain meaningful employment, improve their standard of living and be better individuals in their respective communities.
So far two unemployed youths – Ricardo Bahadur, 21 of Tain Settlement and Kenny Khemraj, 17 of Clifton Settlement on the Corentyne – were entered into a six-month training programme. The training will be held at the Mohamed Alli bodywork, welding and mechanic shop.
According to Deputy Supt. Taylor, Alli has expressed his willingness to continue assisting the Police with such interventions in making the community a safer and better place.
The No 2 (New Amsterdam, Canje, East Bank Berbice) subdivision under OC Deputy Superintendent Guy Nurse and Station Sergeant of the Central Police Station Marlon O’ Donaghue has been rolling out a number of activities.
Among them was a day of sports and games held at Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam involving members of the various youth groups across the region. The groups participated in various sporting disciplines including cricket, football, volleyball and circle tennis. At the conclusion of the day’s activities the winning teams were presented with trophies and other prizes.
The focus will shift to sub division No2 (West Coast Berbice) today where the Police under OC, Assistant Superintendent Joshua Harvey John, in collaboration with the St Michael’s Anglican Church, will be staging an anti-suicide walk and address in observation of the Church’s 60th anniversary.
Coordinator, Sergeant Cynthia Kelly, Station Sergeant of the Fort Wellington Police Station, stated that the activity will begin at 08:00 hrs with a walk from the No 23 turn to the Church Hall at Hope Town.
Police officers from most of the stations in Berbice along with members of the Mothers Union from parish churches in both regions five and six are expected to participate in the march and lecture to follow.
