The National Sports Commission (NSC) and Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) offered their support to the National Junior Table Tennis Team in separate financial contributions to Guyana’s Table Tennis
Association (GTTA).
The support comes as the GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe managed to convince both institutions that the team is on a quest to bring Guyana regional honours at the 2016 Caribbean Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships.
Members of the Executive Committee of the GOA, which included President, K. A Juman Yassin, Secretary General, Hector Edwards and Treasurer, Garfiled Wiltshire visited the team at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue yesterday during their final training session before departing Guyana.
The GOA President stated he was happy to support Guyana’s junior table tennis talents since he sees them as the future prospects to represent Guyana at Olympic Games. In his brief address to the players, he spoke of the importance of merging academia and sports and asked the players to give their best in representing the Golden Arrow Head.
Former Junior Table Tennis Champion and Caribbean Squash Champion, Garfield Wiltshire and former cycling champion, Hector Edwards also offered words of encouragement to the players as Munroe thanked GOA for their support.
“We feel the team selected has a very realistic chance of qualifying for the Pan American Championships to represent the Caribbean Region and has high medal chances at these Caribbean Championships,” Munroe said.
The 2016 Caribbean Junior and Cadet Championships is scheduled for April 12-18 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The team includes: Boys 18 years and under: Shemar Britton,
Kyle Edghill, Elishaba Johnson and Miguel Wong and Boys 15 years and under: Nicholas Roamin. Coach/Manager: Linden Johnson
Further of critical importance is that these championships will be used as the qualifier for the Inaugural ITTF Pan American Junior Table Tennis Championships scheduled for Vancouver, Canada in June 2016; where the top four teams from the Caribbean will join four teams from Central America, six teams from South America, USA and Canada.
