The Office of the Integrity Commission through a notice published in this newspaper yesterday, is inviting members of the public to submit comments on the draft Code of Conduct for all Ministers of Government; and members of the National Assembly and Public Office Holders.
The notice stated that submissions must be made between yesterday (April 12) and April 25, 2016 to the Office of the Integrity Commission located at 94 Carmichael Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown, from Mondays to Thursdays at 8:00hrs to 16:30hrs and on Fridays from 8:00hrs to 15:30hrs.
Submissions can also be sent to [email protected]
Copies of the draft Code of Conduct are also available at the office of the Integrity Commission and the website: http://www.motp.gov.gy/
According to the Ministry of Presidency’s Website, the purpose of the code is to assist Ministers, Members of Parliament and public office holders in the discharge of their obligations to their constituents and the public at large.
“It provides guidance on the values – the moral qualities – that should govern the conduct of Ministers and Members in discharging their Parliamentary and public duties. It is also meant to reinforce public confidence in the way in which Ministers and public office holders perform those duties.”
It was made clear that public office holders are duty bound by the code in all aspects of their public life. The code, however, does not seek to regulate the conduct of public office holders in their private and personal lives.
The draft document also addresses the acceptance of gifts of more than $10,000, conflict of interests, accountability, dignity, diligence, duty, honour, and even gambling.
In the past, there were little actions against public officials despite reported evidence. These actions included discharging a firearm, drunk driving and trading on insider information.
