Private security services were urged by Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection Keith Scott to
respect their employees irrespective of employment opportunities, and to provide ‘risk insurance’.
This call was made during a recent meeting the Minister held with the Professional Guard Services, Clinton Security Force, Subline Security Services, Guyana Employment Bureau (GEB) Security Service, Roshan Khan (RK’s) Security Service, Kalibur Security Service, Superior Security and Management Services, Home Safety Security Services, Instant Security Services, Massey’s Security Services and Inter Services Enterprise.
Minister Scott explained, “Although we have high unemployment statistics in this country, people still have choices and people still have to be respected… collectively you and I have to give those employees out there, respect.”
Minister Scott, a Government statement said, also advised the proprietors that it would be useful to provide risk insurance due to the nature of the work because employees can be injured or even killed on the job.
“Risk insurance can protect both you and the employees, if you don’t have that insurance you can very well find yourself facing a civil suit down the line, but with risk insurance, that’s eliminated,” Minister Scott explained.
The issue of the non-payment of employees’ National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contribution, deduction of monies from employees’ salary and late payment of salary were also addressed. The Minister said he has received numerous complaints about employees not being able to receive their NIS benefits due to non-payment. He said it is criminal for employers not to pay employees’ contributions.
Minister Scott pointed out that employers should not deduct monies from employees’ salaries when they have worked regardless if they committed any infraction on the job. The law, he explained, does not allow for such actions.
Additionally, the Minister explained to the security services that the current labour laws are outdated, but they will be reformed and be in favour of both employers and employees.
Owner of RK’s Security Services Roshan Khan noted that the issues raised needed to be addressed, especially the issue of non-payment of NIS contributions.
“It is inhumane if anyone partakes in theft of their workers blood and sweat by stealing the NIS. I find it very despicable,” Khan exclaimed.
Khan also asked that laws be made to protect workers from such wrongdoings and those found guilty, be held accountable.
