Braselton, Georgia, USA – F1600 which are purpose built single seat race cars without a rear wing outfitted with the addition of a Honda motor and a MyGale chassis kicked off the 21 race ‘2016 season at the 12 turns, 2.54 Miles course known as Road Atlanta in thrilling fashion.
This series is very competitive with just about anyone capable of winning in any given race. The drivers and cars are as equal as equal can be which equates to a championship that will be fought tooth and tail. All three races were packed with numerous passes and lead changes throughout the field.
Calvin Ming of Guyana was always in the running for wins in all three races but, narrowly missed taking the checkered flag in race one as part of the seven cars that battled for supremacy towards the checkered flag.
Ming driving for Team Pelfrey which is a Florida-based team where Ming resides managed a 5th place finish just behind his teammate, Phillippe Denes who was nudged at the finish line and had to settle for 2nd place. Race 1 was won by Peter Portante in the K-Hill Motorsports MyGale.
Race 2 saw Calvin Ming narrowly missed out on a podium although; he was in contention throughout the race but, was unable to get the needed traction on the last lap to snag the win.
The race came down to the finish line with Neil Verhagen in the K-Hill Motorsport MyGale made a pass on the last lap to snatch the glory whilst Ming matched his previous 5th place finish just behind his Team Pelfrey teammate, Phillippe Denes.
In the final race of the weekend for the F1600, on cool morning with about 6 Celsius trackside temperature, Calvin Ming spun out on the pace lap whilst warming up his tires and was relegated to the back of the field as the green flag dropped.
Ming quickly made up numerous positions by zigzagging through the field from last place all the way up to challenging for the lead along with ten other cars as the race wound down towards the finish line.
As the pack raced towards the checkered flag, they were spread out the entire width of the track. At the final corner, Calvin Ming made a valiant move for the lead and win but, the stiff competition from Max Mallinen who had made a sensational pass along the backstretch earlier in the last lap to narrowly beat out Steve Bamford who snuck in for 2nd place ahead of Calvin Ming by inches.
With three top 5 finishes with one being a 3rd place podium, Ming can now concentrate on Watkins Glen on May 13-15 ‘2016.
