Home team Monedderlust registered their first win of the Stag Elite League Finale when they needled Georgetown Football Club (GFC) who remains winless when Round 8 play in this inaugural tournament was completed on Saturday night at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
The opening match saw the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) formalizing their fourth win of the FINALE while handing Buxton their fifth loss as they moved into joint fourth place just behind Alpha on goal difference.
Monedderlust having changed Head Coach have actually changed their fortunes and have been looking a more potent unit; they doubled their previous points with a well deserved win that their home fans enjoyed.
GFC though, while fielding a young team continues to show that they will be a force to be reckon with in the coming seasons and did put up a good fight also but were not able to avoid the home team from recording their first win.
The lone and winning goal was netted by none other than Monedderlust’ Captain Travis Henry in the 34th minute of the match. While GFC has suffered their seventh loss of the FINALE and still remains on a single point, they will not fear being relegated as no team will be in the first two years of this inaugural league which has taken the local game to another level.
The GDF / Buxton shindig saw both sides taking the fight to each other but the first 45 minutes did not produce any goals. Kennard Simon broke the deadlock in the 68th minute as the lads from the Army finally got behind the Buxton defence.
Even after the Army took the lead the battle was ding dong with Buxton enjoying some good moments. But it was the military boys, who would enjoy further glory when in the second minute of added on time Delroy Fraser hammered in the sealer.
There was no getting back into the game for Buxton who did not do their cause any good when the Referee issued a straight red card to Ralph Muffatt for using abusive language to the man in charge of proceedings.
League action will be played at the Buxton United Recreational ground for the first time on Friday. Buxton will play the feature match against the red hot Fruta Conquerors with the curtain raiser bringing together FINALE Leaders Bakewell Slingerz and GDF from 18:30hrs.
