A prime suspect who was arrested shortly after the shooting of schoolboy, Bramdat Singh, called “Ronald”,
16, of Lot 5D Bush Lot Public Road has been charged with armed robbery .
The man, Bharat Madray, 27, of Shieldstown, West Coast Berbice, was said to be the brain behind the act. He appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver in the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s court on a charge of robbery under arms.
He is accused of robbing Bramdat Singh, Snr, of a quantity of gold valued at $7.4M and $500,000 in cash.
The incident occurred around 6:30 hrs on Saturday just as goldsmith, Bramdat Singh Snr, called “Rajesh”, 42, was in the process of setting up his stand at the Rosignol Market, West Bank Berbice.
Madray who was an accessory to the robbery was captured when he tried to hide a bike which was used by the two other bandits.
The young Singh who is expected to write his CSEC in a month was shot through his jaw. He was picked up by his father and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Singh was accompanied by his son, who was outside the stand as they were about to open up when the two bandits who were armed with handguns struck and demanded the bag with their jewelry.
After the elder Singh resisted one of the bandits shot his son though the jaw. The man then let go of the bag. The bandits then made good their escape with the bag the gold which cost over $7.4M.
The teen is a fifth form student at the Fraser Educational Institute at Fort Wellington.
Madray was refused bail and remanded to jail until 21April.
