The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation to ascertain the real circumstances surrounding the shooting of one of its ranks.
The rank, a Constable attached to the East Coast Demerara intelligence section turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday with a gunshot wound to his left foot.
He told his superiors that he had accidentally shot himself.
This newspaper was told that the rank was in a vehicle at a Guyoil Service Station in the city when his service revolver accidentally went off.
The bullet entered and exited his leg.
Kaieteur News was told by Commander Marlon Chapman that the rank was carrying a force weapon at the time.
He did not give details of how the rank sustained his injury, except to say, “He must have had it in an awkward position.”
Commander Chapman said that an investigation will be done. He said that “there are certain Standard Operating Procedures that need to be adhered to as far as a firearm is concerned.
