The country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations begin today with the launch of the 50th Commemorative stamps and a walk in observance of World Health Day. It will culminate on May 26 with a massive float parade.
The 50 Days of Activism was officially launched yesterday by Minister Nicolette Henry, at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown. Minister Henry heads the Department of Culture.
The Minister encourages all Guyanese to get in the spirit of celebration and start to decorate their homes even if it is with one (Guyana) flag.
Persons were encouraged to use the 50th Anniversary logo to decorate their homes, offices and vehicles.
Today marks the first 50 days until the big day and there are 50 days of activities planned by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Culture.
In briefing the media, Gillian Frank, said that the 50 days of activism was brought out of a discussion with the Ministry of Education and Health. It will showcase the regional personnel participating in 50 days in health awareness.
The focus will be on non-communicable disease, mental health, chronic disease, dental health care and men’s health among other topics.
There are also a number of events which will be taking part in the various regions.
According to the Director of Sports, Christopher Jones, for the entire month of May there are several activities that are planned and coordinated throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.
On May 4, the National Sports Commission will host its annual sports award at the National Cultural Centre where sportsmen and sportswomen from various disciplines will be awarded.
President David Granger will be in attendance and he will present the award to the best sportsman or woman of the year.
On May 15, the Guyana Football Federation will be hosting a football match between Canada and Guyana.
The Ministry of Tourism will be hosting the Guyana Jubilee Festival and there will be three nights of activities starting from May 19. Local artistes will be performing on the final night.
On May 26, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) will be hosting a mega concert and Ansa McAL will have one on the following day.
The National Flag Raising Ceremony will be on May 25 at D’Urban Park, Georgetown.
The Jubilee Float parade will be on May 26 and will travel along Brickdam into the newly constructed Durban Park.
The ceremony will see military and cultural displays.
Banks DIH will also be hosting a concert on May 28, while Hits and Jams will have a mega concert on May 29.
