WICRICNEWS – Gayle has endorsed Darren Sammy’s criticism of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
The star batsman said in an Instagram post this morning that he is backing his captain 100 per cent and that a shakeup is needed at both the WICB and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA).
According to Gayle, who indicated that this might be the end of the road for him and West Indies cricket, WIPA had done a poor job of representing the players.
He said: “Thank God for the prize money because the match fee is a joke what WIPA agreed to… so I’m donating my match fees to charity!”
Gayle’s full comment read:
Big up double #WT20#Champion captain @darrensammy88 – I support and backed him a 100% with his speech, well said about WICB, WIPA needs to be shaken up as well! The struggle is real. Sammy retired from Test cricket but I haven’t. However, I’m not eligible for selection for Test and ODI, think we played our last game for West Indies 2016-Hopefully 2017 the W.I fans can see us again. Thank god for the prize money because the match fee is a joke what WIPA agreed to…so I’m donating my match fees to Charity! #PayMe #Champion
Weeks before the start of the ICC World Twenty20, uncertainty loomed over whether the now victorious West Indies T20 team would even participate in the championship, after the players raised concerns about remuneration.
Acting as spokesman of the 15-member squad, Sammy said in a letter to the WICB in February that the financials on offer were not acceptable. He pointed out that 14 squad members are not part of WIPA and “hence have not given authorisation to WIPA to negotiate on our behalf.”
After defeating England in spectacular fashion on Sunday to win the trophy, Sammy was openly critical of the WICB, citing a lack of support. (loopjamaica.com)
