-Forde wins 1500m; UG returns with five medals
The University of Guyana’s, Emmanuel Archibald broke the 7 metre barrier in the Long Jump at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Invitational Track and Field Competition, last weekend at Mona Campus in Jamaica.
Archibald won bronze in the long jump event with a massive 7.2m mark; it was his second medal after he won gold in the triple jump with 14.73m. Archibald would love the jump events given he is an outstanding national basketball player.
Cleveland Forde and Dane Johnson also won individual medals for the University of Guyana in the 1500m race. Forde won the event in 4:16, while Johnson finished second in 4:32. UG won the Men’s Medley Relay gold.
The team of Owen Adonis, Floyd Phillips, Kadeem Peters and Forde ran the 1600m Medley that featured a 400m, 200m, 200m and 800m in that order in 3:37.50 for first place. The performance wrapped up a five medal haul that included three gold; one silver; and one bronze for the team at the meet in Jamaica.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Sports Officer at the University of Guyana, Lavern Fraser lauded the team’s efforts in Jamaica, stating that everyone is happy with their performances at the meet that featured UWI’s Cave Hill Campus, Barbados; St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago and Mona Campus, Jamaica.
The other members of the University of Guyana’s Track and Field team included Kezia Bess, Vanessa Shelto, Travis Poole, Salim Yussuf, Ameer Yussuf and Kleon Spelling. Mark Scott was appointed Coach of the team for the UWI Invitational.
