A Carpenter was fined $10,000 yesterday after he confessed to maliciously damaging his wife’s glass windows when he appeared before Magistrate Dylan Bess.
Michael Paul of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to the charge which said on April 1 at Norton Street Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged six window panes, valued $5000 and belonging to Rockell Paul.
According to prosecutor Michael Grant, the husband and wife no longer reside together because of a previous misunderstanding. On the day of the incident it was reported that the defendant went to the woman’s home under the influence of alcohol. Subsequently an argument ensued, and as a result, the man picked up a rock and hurled it at the windows, shattering them. The woman then made a report to the police and he was arrested after investigations.
When the defendant was asked for comment, he argued that he can replace her windows at a cheaper cost. After hearing this, Mrs. Paul raised her voice to inform the court of a recent restraining order she had filed against him. She then complained that he persistently stalks her at her workplace and she had opted for the torment to end. “I see him lingering over the road watching me all the time, stalking me at my workplace.”
The magistrate then instructed the complainant to report him to the police if he continues to appear within her vicinity again. He later warned the defendant of the seriousness of the offence and the penalty it carries if violated. The magistrate then ordered that on April 11, the defendant pay the woman $5000 in the presence of the court for the damage done to her window panes, along with a $10,000 fine.
