Winton Semple was elected President of the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) when the Thomas Lands club which was founded in 1902, held its AGM last Friday evening at the club’s pavilion.
Semple, the older sibling of former West Indies ODI batsman Keith Semple, takes over the Presidency from Neil Barry, a former Guyana player, after Barry had served as MSC Head for the last two terms.
Barry is mandated by the club’s Constitution to continue to serve as adviser to the new Executive for one term.
The 47-year-old Semple was selected for Demerara at the Under-19 level in 1985 but the game was washed out before a leg injury hampered his cricket career but he continued to play a vital role at the first division level during the late 1980s and 90s.
Semple played in a period when former President Claude Raphael had introduced a youth section to the club which grew and played together for almost 15 years and he stated that one of the first things he and his executive plans to is to improve the youth section of the Club which has produced West Indies players like John Trim, Rex Collymore, Barrington Browne, Indomattie Gordial and Colin Stuart.
Semple said he also plans to work to lift the standards at the club both on and off the field and attract more members to join the club not only cricketers.
“We also will plan more fund raising and other activates for the club like reintroducing things like Dominoes, Whist, Darts and Table Tennis,” Semple promised.
The two Vice-Presidents are Deborah McNichol and Jason Joseph with Adrian Smith as the Secretary. The Assistant Secretary/Treasurer is Motilall Mattadin, the Club Captain is Steven Jacobs and the PRO is former sports Journalist Delvon McEwan.
The two Committee members are Raquel Greene and Oswald Pearce. The MSC is close to full completion of the renovation of its Pavilion which has been upgraded with new washrooms and a new Bar, while the ground was recently raised to prevent flooding.
