Newly elected Mayor of New Amsterdam Kirt Wynter plans to get down to the arduous task of fixing the town as early as possible. Wynter, a businessman and a newspaper agent was elected Mayor of Guyana oldest town on Friday at the inaugural meeting of the new Council. He was nominated by APNU+AFC Councillor William “Bill” Moore and seconded by another coalition Councilor Pollyann Shultz.
Wynter in his inaugural speech as Mayor assured that he would work in the best interest of the town. He gave his commitment to work with all stakeholders including Councilors in making New Amsterdam a safe place to live. Some of his priorities are fixing the main roads, streets, drainage, bridges, street lights and playfields. These will have his serious attention as soon as possible. Strict accountability is also expected to be one of the tenets of his tenure as the town’s Chief Citizen.
Deputy Mayor Winifred Haywood was nominated by Wynter and seconded by APNU+AFC Councilor and veteran educator and Mathematician Busta Wright.
Also at the meeting, Busta Wright was elected as Chairman of the Finance Committee with Haywood nominated to serve as Vice-Chairperson. The other members of the Committee are Compton Grant, Pollyann Shultz, Patricia Lynch, William Moore and Eusi Smith.
The APNU+AFC coalition secured 12 seats while the People’s Progressive Party secured two.
Those elected apart from the persons already mentioned the other Councilors are Kirt Fraser, Sheenta Lambert, George Tucker and Angelique Springer. They are all from the APNU/AFC collation. The two PPP councilors are Sewdat Singh and Elijah Timmers.
