In the midst of celebration of the West Indies sensational 2016 T20 win, tragedy struck last night in the local cricketing fraternity, after the husband of a former national player stabbed her, before taking his own life.
Police said that Abina Parker, 44, was stabbed in the stomach and face at around 21.00 hrs at her Kaneville, East Bank Demerara home during an altercation with her husband.
The husband, identified as Melroy Parker, reportedly hanged himself at the couple’s residence.
Mrs. Parker was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital. She was still being treated there at press time.
Abina Parker represented Guyana in the West Indies senior regional competition, and is a member of the Guyana Police Force cricket club. She also captained Demerara in the Inter-county Senior Women’s Tournament. She also plays softball cricket and is also a professional umpire.
