A relative of slain soldier Kevon Payne has given police the name of an individual that he said executed
the army Lance Corporal last Tuesday.
Police are now looking for the alleged gunman, even as two men remain in custody in connection with Payne’s murder, which was allegedly carried out at the behest of a known drug dealer.
Kaieteur News understands that the relative had initially claimed that police ranks were involved in Payne’s execution.
But according to a police official, the relative has recanted the claim, while stating that he had implicated the police because he was afraid of the gunman.
It is alleged that one of Payne’s brothers, Vellone Thorne, had an argument last week with a drug dealer, who threatened to “finish” him (Vellone) off.
Kaieteur News was told that Kevon Payne confronted the drug dealer about the threat to his sibling.
Payne’s stepfather, Rudolph Thorne, said that he too had tried to make peace between his son, Vellone, and the drug dealer, but to no avail.
Payne was reportedly shot at least six times by his killer, who arrived on the scene on a white motorcycle and escaped with an accomplice, following a brief exchange of gunfire with police ranks.
Shakel Wilson, a friend of the dead man, was shot in the leg.
