Fortune bags 5
By Zaheer Mohamed
Off-spinner Sagar Hathiramani grabbed six wickets for 25 runs to give Demerara a comprehensive 135-run victory over Essequibo in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Igloo Ice Cream inter-county U17
50-over tournament yesterday.
Chasing a respectable 213-9, Essequibo found the bowling of Hathiramani too difficult to handle and were sent packing for a disappointing 78 in 28.1 overs at Enterprise after the game was reduced to 46 overs.
Essequibo openers Bomesh Ramdahin and Kevin Christian looked promising as they added 38 before Christian was bowled by left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd (1-8) for 15. Ramdahin timed the ball well but was then taken off Hathiramani for 22 who also sent back Chanderpaul Mohabir for 14 leaving the score at 56-3. Reon Venture seemed firm before he played across and was bowled by leg spinner Tameshwar Motieram for 12, while Orlando Jailall was run out with scoring triggering an Essequibo collapse. Motieram finished with 2-12.
Earlier, Shamar Dusraj provided Essequibo with the breakthrough when he had Bhaskar Yadram caught for 14 after Demerara were asked to bat in hazy conditions. Mark Ramsammy and Robin Williams added 35 for the second wicket before Ramsammy was bowled by left arm spinner Joel Fortune for 17. But Williams batted positively as he shared in a third wicket stand of 49 with Alphius Bookie. The right handed Williams struck five fours before he was caught and bowled by Fortune for 41 which came off 27 balls. Bookie was then run out for 19 before Fortune who maintained a decent line trapped Kurt Lovell lbw for 23 and bowled Hathiramani for one as Essequibo fought back. Fortune’s tidy bowling caused some hiccups among the home team batsmen; he bowled Anthony Antonio for 26 before Motieram 19 not out, Rajendra Singh 17 and Nedd 13 provided some resistance. Fortune finished with 5-31 from 10 overs while Randy Rooplall had -15.
The competition continues tomorrow.
