Third edition of Anamayah Memorial Basketball competition in Berbice…
All is set for the final of the third edition of the Annual Anamayah Memorial Basketball competition slated for tomorrow at the Fyrish basketball court.
The two teams looking to take home the coveted title are the unbeaten Fyrish Black Sharks of Fyrish Corentyne and Giant Killers and surprise package Ithaca Hardliners of Ithaca West Bank Berbice. A new champion will be crowned since defending champion Rose Hall Town Jammers were knocked out of the competition while the teams from New Amsterdam were also sent packing.
As can be seen both teams are from the country side – Black Sharks from the Corentyne and Hardliners from West Berbice. They have both played a reasonable brand of basketball throughout the competition and will be looking to place their first hold on the trophy.
The Black Sharks who will be hunting in familiar territory have looked ominous throughout the competition devouring all and sundry that showed up before them to play unbeaten so far.
On the other hand the unheralded Hardliners who were virtually unheard of before the start of competition have played some though basketball for the season so far. Most of their opponents were surprised at the stiffness that the Hardliners have portrayed thus succumbing to the rigours of the seemingly hard to beat Hardliners.
The two teams have not met as yet and with the top ranked teams out of the competition and both having a victory over defending champion Jammers, a keen and exciting encounter and hard fought game is anticipated.
The Fyrish Black Black Sharks lineup will come from Lindon Joseph, Reyal Franklyn, Tafawa Dey, Desi Douglas, Keenan Williams, Micheal Marks, Carl Logan and Leroy Lashley.
The Ithaca Hardliners squad is expected to include Kester Edwards, Elroy Amsterdam, Rayman Sinclair, Kevin Perry, Kester Sinclair, Phillip Edwards, Rayal Solomon, Jaden Smith and Kevon Allen.
At stake in the competition are cash and other incentives for the winning and runner-up teams and outstanding players. The tournament has being organised by sport enthusiast Vibert Garnett.
Tip off time is 16:00 hrs.
Representatives of the sponsors are expected to be on hand to help with the distribution of prizes and gave remarks. (Samuel Whyte)
