Dear Editor,
Amid the impetus and currency of the Brian Tiwarie appointment, it leaves one to wonder what really is the role and responsibility of Harmon. Who does he report to? How can a Ministerial Advisor be appointed without the approval of Cabinet? Over the past ten months, the new government has been making some foolish and fatuous mistakes, and Harmon has been at the center of them all. First, it was the shocking and disappointing revelation about the salary increases for Ministers and other government officials. Then Harmon came out in high defence with his arrogance and ‘no apologies’.
Even though the appointment has been rescinded by President Granger after much criticisms, it will go down as visceral hypocrisy and an indictment on his government. The APNU+AFC is so consumed with power that it has lost the groundings with many of its supporters and even the promises that were made for the better governance. It therefore stands to reason, that based on all of the horrendous atrocities that the PPP have committed against Guyanese over the years, the new administration doesn’t seem interested in being and doing better, much to the benefit of the citizenry that have been sweltering in the heat of discontent for far too long. This coalition government has been big on words, but very small on action. It is time President Granger does something about Harmon and all of that power he flaunts with. It is not healthy for the future of the government.
Furthermore, it is always said that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The arrogance and constant blunders caused the PPP to be voted out in 2015. Let’s see what 2020 brings for the APNU+AFC.
