Food for the Poor (Guyana) Incorporated (FFP) has secured the release of four nonviolent offenders in time to spend the Easter Holy Week with their families and friends. These prisoners were incarcerated due to their inability to pay the required fines, even though the amounts were minimal.
On Wednesday March 16, last, the prisoners were interviewed at the Georgetown Prisons by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kent Vincent, and Public Relations Manager, Wayne Hamilton. The CEO informed them of their impending release and shared words of encouragement for the change of their lives in a meaningful way.
On their release, the prisoners were treated at FFP’s office to a simple ceremony that included a special lunch and words of inspiration from the President and CEO of Food for the Poor Incorporated, Florida via telephone, Robin Mahfood; Chairman Paul Chan-A-Sue, CEO Kent Vincent, Director Paulette Charles, Finance Officer of the Prisons, Mark Smith and Father Jerry Dias SJ, who said a special prayer for the inmates.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, loaves of bread were shared and food hampers, clothing, personal care items and bibles were given to the inmates. Cash for assistance with transportation was also provided.
Twice a year, the week of Christmas and during Easter’s Holy Week, the Food for the Poor’s Prison Ministry Programme releases inmates who have committed minor offences.
