Errant driver crashes into cyclist during event
Ray Millington of The Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) returned to winning ways when he rode away from the field to take top honours when the FACC in association with the B Division of the Guyana Police Force
staged a feature 20 miles cycle event.
The event which was jointly coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts and the force’s Community Relations officer Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams was staged as part of the their community relations blitz.
The event which was for cyclists of the FACC saw 20 persons participating. The cyclists were sent on their way by ASP Williams from the junction of Main and Alexander Street and proceed to the No1 Road and back, saw Millington winning from former top rider Neil Reece with Clement Doris and Jason Cameron placing third and fourth.
Among the females Tamika Teixeira had things her way as she won from former champion Marica Dick with Whitney Poyer third.
Curtis Dey was first among the juniors, while Zamal Khan won among the U16 riders from Corwin Collins.
The Prime point prizes were taken by Khan with three, Doris two and Reece one.
The junior, U16 and female riders had a three minutes head start from the main pack.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Williams thanked the participants on behalf of Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam and Officer in Charge of the No1 subdivision, Deputy Superintendent Guy Nurse. He stated that the Police force is not only about arresting people, but using other initiatives in their Social Crime Prevention programme.
He said that the police aim to work with youths to help them to help themselves in a positive way and using sports as medium.
Also expressing thanks were Roberts and executive member of the FACC and sports enthusiast Eli Hazel. Among some of the sponsors were A. Ally and Sons Vickram Jewelry, DSP Guy Nurse, Dwayne Ferdinand, Imran and Sons, Persaud Funeral Home and Sookpaul Gas Station among others.
During the race one cyclist was injured by an errant driver. The driver has since being charged with dangerous driving and was expected to appear in court yesterday. (Samuel Whyte)
