The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is moving to dispose of scores of vehicles; some of them high end ones that have been lying on the wharves.
According to recent notices published in the Official Gazette of Guyana, the vehicles are lying in storage facilities at the John Fernandes Limited and the Guyana National Industrial Company (GNIC) wharves.
At the GNIC, some 20 vehicles have been there, among them a Nissan Cube, since 2008. However, the rest started arriving in 2012 and have remained uncleared.
Under GRA’s regulations, the entity has to first give notice before selling “Want of Entry” items to recoup costs.
After that notice period, the GRA can then move to sell them via auctions or tenders.
Vehicles landing on the wharves have one month to be cleared.
It can rack up charges like storage fees, “Want of Entry” fees, duties and taxes and even freight.
Some of the vehicles at GNIC wharf include pickups, a Mercedes Benz ML 320, Nissan Bluebird and the popular Toyota Allion and Verossa.
At the John Fernandes facilities, there are more than 90 vehicles including trucks, BMWs and Mercedes. Included are Toyota Spacios, Raums, Spacios and Premios and even a Mazda Axela.
The vehicles have been lying on the wharves for up to six years.
In addition to the vehicles, also left on the wharves are items like building materials, footwear, tiles, foodstuff, empty tanks, household appliances and even bleach.
