A Police Constable was among five men arrested on Saturday after they were caught with an unlicensed 9mm pistol with 15 matching rounds.
Police in a statement said that ranks of a police traffic patrol stopped a group of five men, who were on three Honda CG motorcycles at North Street and Louisa Row, Georgetown.
A search was carried out on the men and the unlicensed gun with rounds was found on one of them, who was later found to be a Police Constable, who is stationed in ‘B’ Division (Berbice).
The Constable was placed under close arrest while the other four men are being held for questioning. The motorcycles have been seized.
Investigators are trying to ascertain if the men are a part of a gang of armed bandits operating on motorcycles that has been creating havoc in the city and its environs.
Ballistics checks are being done on the weapon to ascertain if it was used in any previous criminal activity.
The arrest of the cop further underscores the widely held belief that law enforcement operatives have been working in collaboration with criminal elements to perpetrate crimes.
