It seems as though officers working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be making
frequent visits to the Essequibo Coast in light of another recent capture of a jaguar. This recent capture was made at Capoey mission, some miles from Mainstay/ Whyaka, where the first two jaguars were captured by Chris Allen on the first occasion and his cousin Troy Fredricks on the second.
Thursday’s capture of the third jaguar was organised by a resident of Capoey mission, Randy Carter and a group of young men from that community.
Carter said that initiatives to capture the jaguar were put in place two weeks ago. The group of organized young men usually stayed up nights waiting for the jaguar to appear. Carter said the guys would position themselves in trees.
The group was responsible for erecting a wooden trap into which the jaguar was lured. The captured jaguar is currently at the lake top. Residents said that officers at EPA will transport the animal to a zoo in the City some time Tuesday.
The jaguars are said to be roaming the hinterland areas of Capoey Mission, Tapakuma, Mainstay/ Whyaka and in the Lima Sands area. Their main reason for venturing into the inhabited areas is primarily in search of food.
More recently, a Lima Sands resident said that she saw a jaguar in her yard. The woman said visible foot tracks of the jaguar were evident. Jaguars have been killing and eating dogs and other domesticated animals. (Yannason Duncan)
