The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, M.S in association with the National Commemoration Commission for Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations would be hosting a one-day Cavalcade of Sports at the Area ‘H’ ground on Sunday April 24 to coincide with independence celebrations.
The event would also be used to show case the club’s achievement which led to them receiving the Medal of Service from the Government o Guyana.
A special committee has been set up by the club which will be headed by Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster to plan for this event. Other members of the Committee are Keith Hicks, Ravin Kissoonlall, Franklyn Ross, Levi Nedd, Sydney Cort, Terry Pike and Elizabeth Brusch.
The National Commemoration Commission via the National Sports Commission would be pumping $490,000 into the day’s events which will cover prizes and trophies for six sporting competitions.
Foster disclosed that the events would be five-over cricket, two team softball, football, volleyball, basketball and athletics.
Four teams would contest the hard ball cricket. The volleyball and basketball tournaments would have attractive cash prizes and trophies at stake for the top two teams. Trophies would also be given to the top performers in several athletic and cycling events that would be held after the cricket.
Athletics, cycling and cricket would take place on the ground while the five a side football, volleyball and basketball tournament would be placed on the venue’s all weather Court.
Athletic events include the 100m, 400m and 800m for both male and females; 1500m for males along with a 4 x 100m relay races for males and females.
There would also be 800m and 1500m cycling for males and females. Foster also disclosed that special emphasis would be placed on getting athletes from schools in the Lower Corentyne area to compete in the athletic and cycling events.
