East Bank Demerara side Eccles Combined beat Payless, Star Party Rentals by nine wickets in a feature softball cricket match as part of Guyana’s 50th Anniversary year yesterday at the DCC ground.
Payless, Star Party Rentals won the toss and elected to bat in sweltering heat and reached 59-2 from 5 overs before Eccles knocked off the runs 3.2 overs after making 61-1.
With a vocal turn out, which included a group of Medical Workers from Cuba and former Guyana cricketers Garvin Nedd and Shawn Holder, former Guyana batsman Lennox Cush opened the batting with present Guyana all-rounder Christopher Barnwell.
But Cush, the proprietor of Star Party Rentals, was the first to go for one as Amir Khan, who later removed the left handed Dexter Mckenzie (19) had both of the wickets to fall to bowlers.
Skipper Joseph ‘Joey’ Ramkumar was run out for one leaving Demerara youth player Sachin Singh unbeaten on two with Barnwell, who hit five sixes in 34.
Khan (6) was bowled by Cush before Zameer Hassan, who struck three fours and a six in 25 and Aziz Reerbacchus who made 23 with two sixes and a four, insured a quick win for the East Banks lads against a team in which had Cush, Barnwell and Sean Devers, three players who represented Guyana in cricket.
After the game, the Eccles side was presented with medals by Sam Dookhram, a Canadian representative of Payless Varity Store.
