-First team in competition to win back-to-back titles
Defending champions Chase Academic Foundation produced a ruthless performance in their 9-0 demolition of Lodge to retain the Milo Under-20 Schools Football Championship trophy yesterday, at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.
The reigning title holders clearly saved their best display for the final in what could only be described as a one-sided affair that unfolded before another large turnout that included Milo representative Renita Sital, Director of Sport Christopher Jones, Ministry of Health official Dr. Dennis Bassier, Ministry of Education’s Nicholas Fraser, Guyana Football Federation Vice-President Rawlston Adams and Petra Organisation Directors Marlan Cole and Troy Mendonca.
In the feature game, Kelsey Benjamin led the rout with a helmet-trick in the 26th, 47th, 58th and 66th minutes, while Ralph Parris who netted a double in the 12th and 40th minutes, Ryan Hackett who fired a brace in the 24th and 50th minutes and Sonel Logan who scored a solo effort in the 82nd minute completed their tally.
The win meant that Chase Academic Foundation not only won back to back titles and became the first team in the tournament’s history to do so, but also took away $500,000 towards a school project.
Lodge did not go home empty-handed and waltzed away with the runner-up trophy and $300,000 towards the funding of a school project.
Parris opened the scoring when he outran his markers to punch past the advancing goalkeeper before Hackett made it 2-0 with a fierce left-footer into the roof of the net.
Benjamin commenced his domination with a strike from the left side of the box into the top left corner, before Parris returned to make it 4-0, hitting past the goalkeeper after a cross from the right side.
Shortly after the resumption, Benjamin continued his assault after firing into the lower right corner.
It was one-way traffic after then as Hackett completed his brace to push the score line to 6-0, before Benjamin lashed in two more goals to close his tally, while substitute Logan got into the act to end Lodge’s misery.
Earlier, in the third place playoff, South Ruimveldt eased past Queen’s College 2-0 with Cecil Jackman and Adrian Aaron netting in the 22nd and 23rd minutes respectively.
South Ruimveldt won $200,000 towards the funding of a school project and Queen’s College received $100,000 towards the funding of a school initiative.
Hackett was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy, while the Highest Goal Scorer accolade went to Benjamin with eight goals.
The Best Goalkeeper trophy was collected by Kevis Fraser of Chase Academic Foundation, with only one goal conceded in the entire event, while Coach Vurlon Mills of the same institution was voted the Best Coach Award and Mae’s Secondary, the Most Disciplined Team.
