Today the nation goes to the polls for Local Government Elections (LGE) for the first time in over two decades. The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in a statement issued last evening said that it has been working arduously to ensure successful operations when Polls open at 6:00 am countrywide.
And according to GECOM, the Ballots for outlying areas were transported via aircraft yesterday. The Ballots for Georgetown and locations near to the capital city were slated to be transported from 3:00 am today.
Five hundred and seven thousand, six hundred and sixty-three (507,663) Electors are registered on the Official Voters’ List and a total of one thousand, five hundred and sixty- two (1, 562) Polling Stations will be opened to facilitate voting, GECOM has advised.
The Local Authorities (Elections) Act was amended in 2009 to include as many people as possible, apart from Political Parties. The total number of Groups, Political Parties and Individual Candidates contesting these Elections is eighty three (83) – three (3) Political Parties, seventeen (17) Voluntary Groups and sixty-three (63) Individual Candidates.
