… robbery occurred three doors from former President Jagan’s birthplace
Diligent investigation by police ranks in Berbice led to the capture of a number of suspects who on Saturday evening invaded the home of a retired Headteacher and her elderly husband and their family.
Homeowner Hemauth Jaiprashad, 65, a retired security officer, his wife, Parina Jaipersaud, a retired Headmistress, their two children Roshni and Deochand, both teachers at the Tain Primary School, live at 247 Ankerville, Corentyne, Berbice, in their two-storey wood and concrete house. On Sunday, they were robbed of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry.
Along with Roshni’s husband, Amir Wahid, a foreman, and their two children aged five and two, were at home around 19:30 hrs when the bandits struck.
According to Roshni the family had not too long returned home. She had just finished preparing a meal. She stated that they were sitting under the house when they were suddenly accosted by two unmasked men who came in through the back yard, armed with guns. One was carrying a shot gun while the other was carrying a hand gun and a cutlass.
The woman stated that the men held them up and ordered them not to make a sound or else bad things would happen. The men, using a series of expletives, demanded that they hand over all the gold and money. They were then put to lie on the ground and told not to look at the invaders’ faces. The family handed over all the cash and jewelry they had.
The men asked for a haversack and after being told that there was none the thieves then took the woman’s working bag and forced their loot inside before escaping by jumping over the back fence.
The police were summoned and responded quickly. Acting upon information the cops were able to recover some of the items stolen from a house. Some more probing led the cops to some suspects who are all in custody. Another prime suspect has since disappeared from the area.
An identification parade is expected to be done shortly.
The victims’ house is situated three doors from former President Cheddi Jagan birthplace.
