Dear Editor,
The subject of politics should be taken seriously and probably not one for joking about. But I found myself chuckling when I read the recent letter about the upcoming local government elections, with the hope for change. How lovely and optimistic, I thought.
I had remembered my conversation in early-2000 with a senior staff member in the Georgetown Town Hall department that dealt with the matter of home extensions, about a recent home extension.
I noticed that seemed larger than the original house. He told me that did not matter. There was no law against it! An extension could be virtually any size.
Surprised, I could make no comment. Used to strict British local government laws and rules, where extensions had to follow building regulations, plans having to be submitted in advance for approval, and proportions and things like access of light and the effect on neighbours had to be taken into consideration, the work inspected at every stage by the local authority building staff, etc., I was at a loss for words.
However, I sincerely hope that when ”citizens come out and exercise their franchise so that they can elect the persons who they want to represent them on the various councils and municipalities” they get what they expected to have voted for. “Hope springs eternal………..”.
