No place for Hetmyer, Powell back for L/Wards
By Sean Devers
The national cricket selectors headed by Jaguars Assistant Coach and Manager Rayon Griffith yesterday announced Guyana’s 13-man squad for the ninth round PCL four day First-Class game against Leewards Hurricanes in Antigua starting Friday.
Two changes were made from the squad which defeated the Windwards Volcanoes in St Lucia in the last round.
Shiv Chanderpaul, who retired from International cricket and Chris Barnwell, return to the team after recovering from injuries. Chanderpaul sustained a finger injury in the Masters t20 in Dubai while Barnwell suffered his injury during the recent Regional Super50 tournament.
Both players showed no effects of their injuries during their last first division games in which Barnwell scored a double century for DCC and Chanderpaul made a ‘big’ hundred for Everest.
The pair replaces Test player Assad Fudadin and Robin Bacchus, who did not play in Barbados or St Lucia.
Surprisingly there is no place for West Indies Under-19 Captain Shemron Hetmyer who is the only player to lead the Regional team to U-19 World Cup Championship honours and who has played six First-Class matches.
Steven Jacobs who has also fully recovered from side strain has also been overlooked.
Defending Champions and front runners Jaguars are on 125 points were scheduled to depart for Antigua today.
Meanwhile, the Leeward Hurricanes includes their two U-19 World Cup players (Keacy Carty & Alzarri Joseph) as well as former West Indies opener Keiron Powell who makes a come-back to Regional cricket after a two-year break, self imposed exile from the game.
The Hurricanes have made one change to its 13-man squad for Friday’s game with the inclusion of 26 year-old Powell.
Left-handed Powell played 21 Tests but none since June 2014 when West Indies faced New Zealand in Jamaica and has three tons and two fifties at Tests level.
After a few discrepancies with the WICB, Powell decided to take time off from cricket and try out for the LA Dodgers Baseball team after doing some training in the USA.
A New York Yankees scout had a look at Powell in Florida and was unimpressed so it’s back to cricket for the player from Nevis who last played for the Leewards against Barbados in April 2014.
The 19-year-old Carty who made his First-Class debut in the last match against T&T with a half-century and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, who also played in U-19 World Cup and has 18 wickets from six First-Class matches, are both in as they look to expose young talent.
Jaguars squad: Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Rajendra Chandrika, Leon Johnson (Captain), Vishaul Singh (V/Captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble (Wicketkeeper), Christopher Barnwell, Veerasammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie, Devendra Bishoo, Keon Joseph, Ronsford Beaton, Esuan Crandon (Head Coach), Rayon Griffith (Assistant Coach/Manager) Beverley Nelson (Physiotherapist).
Hurricanes squad: Nkrumah Bonner (Captain), Orlando Peters (Vice Captain), Keacy Carty, Rahkeem Cornwall, Daron Cruickshank, Colin Hamer, Jahmar Hamilton (Wicketkeeper), Montcin Hodge, Alzarri Joseph, Jeremiah Louis, Kieran Powell, Jacques Taylor, Gavin Tonge.
