Struggle on for funds to send team for Olympic qualifier
Even as the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GBA) places emphasis on its nursery of boxing, the
association has an immediate need for funding for its three member team to travel to the Olympic qualifying tournament in Buenos Aires Argentina from March 9 – 20. Speaking with President of the GBA Steve Ninvalle, Kaieteur Sport was informed that they are out over $2,200us to cover accommodation for two of the team members.
Ninvalle informed that the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has provides funding for accommodation for one of the team, while the National Sports Commission (NSC) has given the air tickets for all three members. The team comprises of boxers Desmond Amsterdam and Dennis Thomas, with Sebert Blake as Manager/Coach.
Ninvalle is soliciting corporate intervention at this late hour to ensure the team travels to Argentina for this important event. Two of the country’s leading amateur boxers in Thomas and Amsterdam are making the journey. Both are Caribbean Championship gold medal winners and it is hoped these two will represent and make it to the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has been given a major boost with leading city private school, Chase Academy, offering a scholarship to a young pugilist.
Ninvalle confirmed that following talks with Administrator/Principal, Mr. Henry Chase, he “graciously and unhesitatingly” agreed to support the association.
The Chase Academy scholarship will be given to one young boxer competing in the upcoming International Schoolboys and Juniors tournament. This Caribbean first Schoolboys and Juniors tournament will be staged on April 29 and 30 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
If we are to have better athletes then the emphasis must be academics and sports. It is only through such a marriage that the full potential of our sportsmen and women can be realised, Ninvalle had pointed out.
The details of the scholarship are to be sorted depending on the age of the selected boxer.
Barbados, Jamaica and St Lucia have so far confirmed participation.
GABA has named a 40-man squad to train for possible selection to represent this country in that competition.
