Retrieve Raiders invaded Half Mile Bulls territory with power forward Dwayne Roberts leading the
charge to bounce away with a thrilling two-point 80-78 win in the inaugural Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA)/104.3 Power FM Mashramani Open Basketball Championships Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court, Linden.
Roberts was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award for his 24 points and 15 rebounds; three block shots and two assists. Keon Cameron scored 16 points, along with six steals and four assists; Abdulla Hamid 16 points and five rebounds; Marvin Hartman 10 points and Neil Marks nine points and 11 rebounds.
For Bulls, guard, Terron Welch had a game high 41 points, three assists and two steals; Michael Turner 13 points; Keifer Tappin 11 points and four rebounds and Niles seven points, 13 boards and three block shots.
Roberts was dominant on the inside with Bulls having no answer to him. Bulls were without the forward, Travin Dryden even though their shooting guard Terron Welch lit up the scoreboard.
This would prove inadequate as Roberts patrolled the middle with authority.
Raiders eventual victory at times seemingly hinged on Roberts delivering. The raiders were off to a good start, keeping up with the pace of the Bulls, at least in terms of scoring. Roberts’ free throws leveled the scores at 16 with Marks pushing Raiders ahead 17-16 at the end for the first quarter.
Tappin’s shot from three-point range made it 23-23 before Welch fast break pushed them ahead 27-25. Bulls maintained a 31-30 lead, but Hartman delivered from downtown before Turner answered. Marks reverse basket gave the Raiders a slim 35-34 lead. Hamid joined in with one of his own as the Raiders kept a 40-39 lead.
Bulls have shown their resilience in the third quarter, but Raiders were able to control the tempo somewhat and managed to out-play them 26-19 as they extended that lead before heading into the final stanza, ahead 66-58.
Turner and Tappin then picked up the scoring slack for Bulls in the final stretch, but it proved inadequate with Roberts taking over the Raiders offensive thrust to seal the win as a late shot from Bulls missed its intended target.
In the third place playoff, Victory Valley Royals secured a 62-53 victory over the Amelia’s Ward Jets. For the Royals, Trevor Profitt had 17 points and Alwyn Rodney 11 points while Harold Adams was held to seven points. For Jets, Vibert Benjamin led with 14 points and Joel Webster added nine points.
