A pregnant mother was on Friday charged with the murder of her eight-year-old son, Emmanuel King, when she appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
Sonia King, 28, of Lot 565 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool and was remanded to prison until March 21.
It is alleged that on Sunday, February 21, last, while at their Parfaite Harmonie home, she killed her only child while he was asleep.
Post-mortem revealed that little Emmanuel died as a result of suffocation.
Last Monday, King, who is eight months pregnant, reportedly confessed to killing her son to her reputed husband, Robert Vieira, who informed the police the following day. She was arrested later that same day.
At first, King told the police that her son succumbed after falling from a tree earlier that day.
But on Wednesday, she gave a formal statement to investigators where she confessed to strangling the child with a bed sheet.
During a recent interview, Vieira said that when his step son was pronounced dead at the West Demerara Regional Hospital two Sundays ago, he thought that the child had died from injuries he sustained from the fall.
However, the following day, his reputed wife not only confessed to strangling her son to death but also said that she had tried to kill him twice before.
While it is not clear as to why the pregnant mother would kill her child, Vieira said that she told him that she and the little boy’s biological father were bad parents to him and she was worried about the person he would become.
Kaieteur News was told that when the child was younger, King had thrown him out of a window but he was saved by his father.
She had also disappeared for two years, leaving the child behind.
