In one of the most keenly contested steel band competitions in years, the Parkside Steel Orchestra beat back the challenge of its two competitors to cop the top prize in the Large Band Category in this year’s Republic Bank Masharani Steel band Competition.
Before an almost packed Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Parkside, with its up tempo rendition, was the crowd favourite and it was no surprise when they relegated the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports Steel band to second place while the Guyana Police Force Band, though entertaining, had to settle for third.
But it was the Large School Band Category that had the Sports Hall audience in a frenzy.
Much to the crowd’s delight, the North Ruimveldt Secondary School emerged the winner, dethroning two time champions the GBTI/Buxton Steel Orchestra who came in a close second, with the Bishop’s High School band coming in third.
In the Small School Band Category, the judges gave the nod to Dolphin Secondary with Lodge Secondary and St Rose’s High Schools coming in second and third respectively.
