Many traveling to the Essequibo Coast would notice the physical and cultural transformation that continues to
prevail on the Essequibo Coast (Pomeroon/Supenaam). In the area of transportation, two men credit themselves with initiating the speed boat service some 34years ago. That service has expanded from one speedboat to many others today.
Eustace Alphonso and Asif Akbar (Bata) are the initiators. Akbar spoke about how his life was transformed over the years. The business man said on October 5, 1982 he and Alphonso who remains friends were the first two Essequibians to have introduced the speedboat services to the Essequibo Coast.
Akbar said that he provided a 48-horse power Yamaha engine while his friend Alphonso provided the boat which bore the inscription” Snow White”.
Back then Akbar said the fare from Supenaam to Parika was $20. Today that fare has increased to $1,300. Akbar said at that time the only people that used the speed boat service were Pomeroon residents.
“I had a bus. Even if it was one person, I used to take them to Charity.” Akbar said that as young entrepreneurs he and Alphonso were more fascinated with the idea of providing a service to the people of Region Two than earning a living.
However, after three months of operation, Alphonso returned to the interior and Akbar was left with the boat which he continued to operate for a month after which he handed over to his brother.
Akbar said that he and Alphonso were unable to continue the speedboat service because it was not economically viable due to the location where they lived and operated the service. Akbar lived at Reliance while Alphonso lived in the Pomeroon. (Yannason Duncan)
