Almost a month after she was rescued by the police acting on instructions of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, the mentally challenged Essequibo woman was transferred Friday morning to the Georgetown Public Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
The Prime Minister had ordered her removal from her mother’s Richmond Housing Scheme home.
The young woman is said to be responding to neighbours. She is also showing improvements in her personal hygiene. “She is doing things for herself now.”
Doctors at the Suddie Public Hospital have completed their part in taking care of the former aspiring nurse. Her transferral is in keeping with continued medical treatment.
The young woman was locked away in a room for several years at her mother’s residence because she had become violent, reportedly towards her mother. Nagamootoo learnt about the young woman’s plight after an Anna Regina resident informed the Prime Minister about the condition under which the girl lived.
The information was provided during a “meet the public” forum where Government Ministers met with residents and listened to their concerns. Immediately he ordered the young woman’s removal from her mother’s home.
Compassionate residents who knew of the young woman’s prolonged mental issue have expressed satisfaction especially to Nagamootoo and to the resident who alerted the Prime Minister about the young woman’s plight.
Devika Persaud, a resident of Land of Plenty, on the Essequibo Coast said she was impressed with Nagamootoo’s swift response toward rescuing the young woman.
The young woman suffered a mental breakdown while she was pursuing nursing at the Georgetown Public Hospital. (Yannason Duncan)
