Slingerz proved ruthless in front of goal as they handed the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) a 7-1 drubbing while Fruta Conquerors defeated Buxton FC 2-1 when the second round of the Guyana Football Federation Stag
Elite League Finale continued on Wednesday night at Tucville.
Slingerz dominated the opening exchanges and forward Vurlon Mills put them ahead when his volley found the back of the net in the 23rd minute before Clive De Nobrega doubled the lead in the 32nd with a thunderous strike from 25 yards out.
GDF hardly threatened in the first half while Slingerz continued to attack, creating several chances as Trayon Bobb’s solo effort extended the advantage in the 40th to give his team a 3-0 lead at half time.
GDF showed purpose in the second half, but Slingerz began pushing forward again and Julian Wade tapped in a cross from the left corner within the 18-yard box. Tishard Joseph’s powerful shot from 30 yards out gave GDF goalkeeper Oswald Cornette no chance as Slingerz grabbed 5-0 lead by the 60th minute before Olvis Mitchell pulled one back for GDF in the 67th.
Domini Garnett who had a fine game netted two minutes later; Garnett evaded his marker before firing from inside the area after collecting a cross from the right side of the box. Unlike the GDF, Slingerz defence stood firm as they thwarted their opponents on several occasions. Slingerz were not done yet as Devon Millington was not to be denied, his shot caught Cornette off his line in the 87th.
In the feature match, Fruta Conquerors made a steady start and went ahead in the 18th minute-Trevon Lythcott’s free kick was headed out of the area only to find Jahaal Greaves who acrobatically found the back of net.
Fruta Conquerors could have extended their lead, but Shaquille Agard sent his shot straight into the hands of Buxton custodian Darren Marks four minutes later. Buxton pushed for an equaliser and almost had one, however Conquerors goalkeeper Derrick Carter tipped Denver Dennis’ free kick over the crossbar in the 30th minute.
Dennis forced a save from Carter once again just before the interval as Conquerors enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the break. Dennis proved the most outstanding player for Buxton; his pace and control gave his opponents a torrid time forcing another save from Carter eight minutes into the second half.
Dennis Edwards wasted an opportunity to extend Conquerors lead sending his shot wide of goal. Buxton failed to make use of a few lapses by Conquerors defence, however Shaquille Agard doubled Conquerors lead when he beat Marks to his left from inside the box after collecting a cross from the left corner in the 67th minute.
Raphael Edwards attempt to clear the ball resulted in an own goal in the 86th minute, but it came too late to give Buxton any hopes of an equaliser.
Matches continue today at the GFC ground with Pele taking on Monedderlust in the opening match at 18:00hrs with the main attraction between Alpha United and Georgetown Football Club.
