Matheson wins female title
Despite placing second in the third and final stage, Raul Leal of Team Evolution was
crowned overall champion of the 6th Forbes Burnham Memorial three-stage cycle road race which ended yesterday.
In this the first year that the event has been contested over three stages; Leal who clocked 5 hours 54 minutes 05 seconds to win, led his team’s domination of this event. Teammates, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams (5:54:36) and Orville Hinds (5:55:17) copped the 2nd and 3rd places overall with Paul De Nobrega (5:59:33) of Team Alanis, Shaquille Agard (5:59:34) of Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club and Team Coco’s Junior Niles 6:01:40 closing out the top six positions.
However, Hinds out-sprinted Leal to win the third and final stage which commenced from Homestretch Avenue (behind the gardens), proceeded to Belfield on the East Coast Demerara before returning to the starting line for the finish.
Hinds stopped the clock at 1 hour 52:06 seconds, Marlon Williams placed third, De Nobrega fourth, Silvio Innis fifth and Michael Anthony sixth. Hinds also copped the second stage which commenced yesterday from Linden and finished on Homestretch Avenue, a distance of 65 miles,
locking 2 hours 52 minutes 42 seconds.
Niles took the runner up spot in 2:52:54 followed by Romello Crawford, Leal, Raphael Leung and Williams. Leal also won the first stage which was contested on Sunday from New Amsterdam to Rose Hall, a distance of 29 miles. He completed the distance in 1 hour 09 minutes 15 seconds. Michael Anthony placed second, Williams was third followed by Shaquille Agard, Niles and Crawford in that order.
Jornel Yearwood won the junior category in 6 hours 01 minute 58 seconds while Leung finished second and Christopher Cornelius third. Niles won the veteran segment ahead of Jaikarran Sookai and Stephen Fernandes respectively.
Christine Matheson of Trojan Cycle Club (Berbice) pedaled away with the female category while Whitney Poyer placed second. Williams won three primes, Agard and Matheson two each while Hinds, Innis, Andre Green, Fernandes, Leal, Griffith and Niles one apiece in the final stage. The event, sponsored by Burnham Foundation was held in observance of the former President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham’s 93rd birthday which was on Saturday last.
The race was held over one stage previously, Georgetown to Belfield and back but now will be a three-stage contest with the organisers planning to expand and include overseas riders.
