Nine years after he was charged with rape, Theron Cameron, a resident of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was acquitted. Cameron was visibly moved yesterday as the Jury announced the verdict of not guilty for the offence.
He covered his face then raised his hands above his head before walking briskly out of the courtroom of Justice Priya Sewnarine Beharry.
According to the indictment, Cameron had carnal knowledge of an underage female on August 2, 2007.The victim was said to be 14 years-old when Cameron sexually penetrated her. The rape allegedly took place in the jetty area of Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD.
Cameron’s trial took place in camera at the Georgetown High Court before Justice Beharry and a mixed 12-member Jury.
Five witnesses were called by State Prosecutors Stacy Goodings and Tuanna Hardy. Cameron also called four witnesses and led a defence of alibi. The accused was represented by Attorneys Maxwell McKay and Folio Richards.
