As part of their Republic Day and 50th anniversary celebrations, on Friday 19th February, the Rising Sun Judo Club held a special competition at Marian Academy.
Watched by a small but vocal crowd of judo fans and practitioners, the Rising Sun Judo club first “competition for grades” for 2016 to coincide with Guyana’s 50th anniversary and Republic Day celebrations, saw a format used that had not been seen locally in decades being employed.
That format saw the junior judokas being given a chance to challenge a senior counterpart of their choice to a six minute duel using all the traditional techniques that may not necessarily be available to them in the Olympic format of Judo, at the end of which they would be evaluated by a panel based on their performances, knowledge, application and execution of techniques.
The competition attracted big names such as 2014 inter-Guiana silver medalists Stephan “Guadaloupa” Barry and Khadija “yaz” Ba as well as ground work specialist Webster McRae snr, while among the juniors were, the always dangerous Randy Phillips and Corwin D’Anjou, Nick Boyer, Khaiso Lall, Alex Jarvis, Webster McRae jr and the always colorful Rayon Yaw. The result was ten scintillating matches with displays of determination, heart and spectacular technique and the following promotions were awarded: Alex Jarvis-5th kyu, Randy Phillips-2nd kyu, Rayon Yaw-3rd kyu, Webster McRae jr- 5kyu and Nick Boyer- 4th kyu.
Rising Sun instructor Bruce Fraser as well as the students of Rising Sun is expressing thanks to Senseis Ellery Fraser, Joe Edmondson and Charles Ambrose for taking time out from their schedules to be part of the evaluating panel.
