An employee of the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) was yesterday, released on $200,000 bail after he denied
stealing over $2M worth in gold from the company when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Ronald Singh, 30, of Lot 161 Hibiscus Avenue ‘AA’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara is accused of stealing eight ounces, nine grams of gold worth $2,153,034 from the GGB on February 19, last, at Brickdam, Georgetown.
He was released on bail after a successful bail application was made by his Attorney George Thomas, before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The lawyer told the court that his client has been gainfully employed at the GGB since 2013. He said that Singh would have no difficulties complying with any conditions attached to his bail. Thomas added that his client is willing to report to police and also lodge his Passport. He also pointed to the fact that the offence is a bailable one.
Police Corporal, Kerry Bostwick presented the case for the prosecution. According to Bostwick, on February 19, the Manager of the GGB noticed that a bar of gold was missing from the laboratory and summoned police. He stated that investigations were launched and staff members of the company’s laboratory were questioned. Bostwick said that based on information received, police contacted the defendant and he later handed over the gold bar.
Prosecutor Bostwick did not oppose pre-trial liberty for Singh. However, he requested that the court order the man to lodge his travel document and report to the police periodically.
These requests were granted by the Magistrate and the defendant was instructed to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Eve Leary and to also hand over his passport to the court.
This matter will be called again on March 10.
