Linden’s Bankers Trust Falcons is banking on its recruits from Kwakwani to help the team to the second
round and ultimately the National Basketball Championship title, hoping to overcome an underdog label that will be obviously attached to the team.
Falcons will face 2014 National Champions, Dyna’s Ravens in the first round of the tournament, but it is optimistic that it has the appropriate resources to overcome any opponent. The disparity is that Ravens is ranked number three in the country, while Falcons is seeded 14th of the 16 teams that will compete for the national basketball title.
Notwithstanding its clear underdog status; a David versus Goliath challenge, Falcons believe that with its imported talent from Kwakwani, which is a breeding ground for talented players, they can actually create some upsets in the upcoming Road to Mecca III.
“Our team is well structured; we have some players from Kwakwani, and because of that, It does not matter who we play in this contest,” the team’s representative, Lawrence Simon told Kaieteur Sport yesterday, adding that they had gone through a rebuilding process to get to this stage where they are actually competitive.
However, bouncing back from a recent blowout during the Mashramani competition in Linden, Simon said that the “last game is not a true reflection of what the team is about. It was a learning experience for us, but we have overcome that”.
Former Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) ‘Most Defensive Player’ and ‘Most Valuable Player’ in 2013, 6’ 4″
forward, Leonard Primo is among those a part of Falcons unit, including Jamal Gilkes and several others. Dale Sauers is also a notable player on their roster.
“We are a formidable team; we are good to go; we are in this for the long haul; it is a beat up for whoever we have to meet,” Simon asserted, adding that his players are fundamentally sound and that should be one major positive factor on their championship journey.
