As investigations continue into the allegations against Attorney-at-Law Gordon Gilhuys who was charged
with attempting to pervert the course of Justice in a statutory rape case, a file for legal advice was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Friday.
Police in Linden say they were investigating a matter of alleged rape committed on a 16-year-old schoolgirl by Michael Franklin, whose lawyer is Gilhuys. According to reports, the rape is alleged to have occurred sometime last month. Gilhuys was arrested on Tuesday at the Linden Magistrate’s Court and taken to the Mackenzie Police Station by Inspector Singh. He was later released on $10,000 station bail.
Reports from the Mackenzie Police Station further indicated that Gilhuys approached a Woman Corporal and urged her to prepare to false statement in favour of his client. It is alleged that he told the Corporal to prepare the statement stating that the victim did not wish to pursue the matter and did not want any further police action. Gilhuys has however denied the allegation.
Gilhuys’ client Franklin, 23, is before the court on another rape charge for which he was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 on December 30, 2015.
The young man who lives at 223 Block 22, Wismar, Linden, and is the promoter of the popular ‘Pasa Pasa’ event, is charged with engaging in sexual penetration of a female without her consent on July 23, 2015. The incident allegedly occurred at One Mile, Wismar.
‘E’ Division Commander Calvin Brutus also said on Friday that the Attorney caused the suspect and his mother to approach the victim and her mother, allegedly to have them drop the charge.
The incident was reportedly reported to Probation and Welfare Officers in Linden. Brutus said there is evidence in the file, including text messages among other things to prove Gilhuys’ efforts to attempt to pervert the course of Justice.
“We have those statements that there were some serious efforts by Gilhuys and his client to intervene and obstruct the investigations.”
Commander Brutus noted, too, that there is a tactic used by the Attorney and his clients who allege Police brutality. He alleged that some of the people who picketed recently in Linden are relatives of Gilhuys’ clients.
It was also noted that victims positively identified stolen booty in the home of one of the Lawyer’s clients. Some were even discovered in one parent’s home.
Commander Brutus said at least two incidents are being investigated by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) based on complaints of Police Brutality by at least one of his clients which he stated was compiled and sent by Attorney Gilhuys.
According to Brutus the client who is a prisoner, alleged that he, Brutus, had assaulted him following the escape of two murder suspects who were held for the murder of Linden businesswoman, Shevon Gordon.
Brutus said, “Aduni Bowen said I choked him and the Inspector beat him and he hurt his back but when examined he had no marks of violence. The Magistrate even made him take off his shirt when he appeared before him just hours after and there were no marks which should have been visible.”
The other complaint, Brutus said, involves suspect Rawle Hinds, who was recently charged in connection with a recent robbery on the Mabura Public Road.
According to Brutus, Hinds alleged that the police broke into his house at Wisroc and stole four ounces of gold among other items. “Hinds’s house is fully grilled, so how can we break into it? One Mark Gomes opened the door and only two police rank entered and searched.”
In relation to these allegations Brutus said, “We have submitted statements and those investigations are being done.”
